Preparation and Baking Instructions
Activate Yeast
In a large mixing bowl, combine warm water, yeast, and granulated sugar. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5 minutes until it becomes frothy.
Make the Dough
Add flour and salt to the yeast mixture. Mix until a dough forms. Knead on a floured surface for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic.
Let It Rise
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour, or until doubled in size.
Shape the Pretzel
Preheat your oven to 450°F (232°C). Punch down the dough and divide it into 2 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a long rope, then shape it into a pretzel.
Prepare the Baking Soda Bath
In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water and 0.5 cups of baking soda to a boil. Carefully drop each pretzel into the boiling solution for about 30 seconds, then remove and place on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.
Add Toppings
Sprinkle coarse sea salt over the pretzels before baking.
Bake
Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.
