Prepare the Tofu
1. Drain and press tofu
Remove the tofu from the package and drain excess liquid. Wrap the tofu in a clean towel and place a heavy object on top. Let it sit for at least 15-20 minutes to press out remaining moisture.
2. Cut and season tofu
Once pressed, cut the tofu into bite-sized cubes. Lightly season with salt and pepper or a pinch of garlic powder if desired.
3. Crisp the tofu
Heat a tablespoon of oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the tofu cubes and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side until all sides are golden brown and crispy. Remove from heat and set aside.
Prepare Teriyaki Sauce
4. Mix sauce ingredients
In a small bowl, combine soy sauce, brown sugar, rice vinegar, minced garlic, grated ginger, sesame oil, and a pinch of red pepper flakes (adjust based on spice preference). Stir well until sugar dissolves.
5. Thicken the sauce
In a small saucepan over medium heat, pour the sauce mixture. Bring to a gentle simmer. In a separate cup, mix cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water to make a slurry. Stir the slurry into the sauce. Cook for 2-3 minutes until the sauce thickens slightly, then remove from heat.
Cook the Vegetables
6. Sauté mixed vegetables
In a separate skillet, heat 1 tablespoon of oil over medium heat. Add sliced bell peppers, broccoli florets, and shredded carrots. Stir-fry for 5-7 minutes until vegetables are just tender but still crisp. Season lightly with salt if desired.
Prepare the Rice

Rinse 1 cup of jasmine or short grain rice under cold water until the water runs clear. In a pot, bring 2 cups of water to a boil. Add the rice, reduce heat to low, cover, and simmer for 15-18 minutes or until the water is absorbed. Remove from heat and let steam with the lid on for 5 minutes, then fluff with a fork.
Combine and Serve
8. Assemble the dish
Return the crispy tofu to the skillet or a clean pan, pour the teriyaki sauce over the tofu and gently toss to coat evenly. Cook over low heat for 2-3 minutes, allowing the tofu to absorb the flavors.
9. Plate and serve
Scoop rice into serving bowls, top with sautéed vegetables and saucy tofu. Garnish with sesame seeds and sliced green onions if desired. Serve hot and enjoy your spicy tofu teriyaki!
