Mussels and Topping

Method

Preparation and Cooking

  1. 1

    Prepare the Mussels

Rinse the New Zealand green shell mussels under cold water to remove any dirt or debris. Discard any mussels that are open and do not close when tapped.

  2. 2

    Steam the Mussels

In a large pot, add about an inch of water and bring to a boil. Place the mussels in a steamer basket and cover the pot. Steam the mussels for about 5-7 minutes or until they have opened up.

  3. 3

    Prepare the Topping

While the mussels are steaming, heat a small pan over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and chopped Spanish onions and sauté for about 3-4 minutes until the onions are translucent.

  4. 4

Combine with Cilantro and Lime Juice

Remove the pan from heat and stir in the chopped cilantro and lime juice. Season with salt and black pepper to taste.

  5. 5

    Serve

Once the mussels are cooked, remove them from the steamer and place them on a serving platter. Spoon the onion-cilantro-garlic-lime mixture over the mussels. Serve immediately.
