Dough Preparation
Activate Yeast
In a small bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
Mix Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour and salt. Make a well in the center, and add the activated yeast mixture, milk, and egg. Mix until a sticky dough forms.
Knead Dough
Transfer the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until it becomes smooth and elastic.
Let Dough Rise
Place the dough in a lightly greased bowl, cover it with a cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until it has doubled in size.
Syrup Preparation
Frying Loukoumades
Heat Oil
In a deep frying pan or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
Fry Dough Balls
Using a spoon or a piping bag, drop small balls of dough into the hot oil. Fry in batches, turning occasionally until they are golden brown and puffed up, about 3-4 minutes.
Drain and Coat
Remove the fried dough balls with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. While they are still warm, dip them into the syrup, allowing excess syrup to drip off.
