Method
Cooking the Pasta
- 1
Boil the Water
In a large pot, bring 4 cups of water to a boil over high heat. Add 1 tsp of salt to the boiling water.
- 2
Cook the Penne
Add the 2 cups of penne pasta to the boiling water and cook according to package instructions, usually about 10-12 minutes, until al dente. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
- 3
Drain the Pasta
Once cooked, drain the penne pasta in a colander and set aside.
Making the Bolognese Sauce
- 4
Sauté the Vegetables
In a large saucepan, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add 1 medium finely chopped onion, 2 minced garlic cloves, 1 grated carrot, and 1 finely chopped stalk of celery. Sauté for about 5 minutes until the vegetables are softened.
- 5
Cook the Ground Beef
Add 1 lb of ground beef to the pan. Cook until browned, about 7-10 minutes, breaking it apart with a spatula.
- 6
Add Tomatoes and Seasoning
Once the beef is browned, add 1 can of diced tomatoes, 2 tablespoons of tomato paste, 1 tsp of oregano, 1 tsp of basil, 1 tsp of salt, and 0.5 tsp of black pepper. Stir well to combine.
- 7
Simmer the Sauce
Reduce the heat to low and let the sauce simmer for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.
Combining and Serving
- 8
Combine Pasta and Sauce
Add the drained penne pasta to the Bolognese sauce and stir gently to coat the pasta evenly with the sauce.
- 9
Serve with Garnish
Serve the pasta in bowls topped with 0.5 cup of grated Parmesan cheese and fresh basil leaves to taste.
