Cooking Instructions
- 1
Prepare the Plantains
Peel the green plantains and cut them into 1-inch thick slices.
- 2
First Fry
Heat the vegetable oil in a deep frying pan over medium heat. Once hot, add the plantain slices and fry for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until they are golden yellow but not browned. Remove them from the oil and drain on paper towels.
- 3
Flatten the Plantains
Using the bottom of a glass or a tostonera (a plantain press), gently flatten each fried plantain slice to about 1/2 inch thickness.
- 4
Second Fry
Return the flattened plantains to the hot oil and fry for another 2-3 minutes, or until they are golden brown and crispy. Remove from the oil and drain on paper towels.
- 5
Season and Serve
Sprinkle the hot tostones with salt and garlic powder to taste. Serve immediately with your favorite dipping sauce.
