Burger Patty

Blooming Onion Topping

Method

Prepare the Burger Patty

  1. 1

    Mix the Patty Ingredients

In a large bowl, combine ground beef, salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder. Mix gently until all ingredients are well incorporated. Do not over-mix to keep the patties tender.

  2. 2

    Form the Patties

Divide the mixture into two equal portions and shape them into patties, making a slight indentation in the center of each to prevent puffing during cooking.

Prepare the Blooming Onion

  1. 3

    Cut the Onion

Peel the onion and place it root-side up. Cut downwards in a star shape, making 8-12 evenly spaced cuts but not cutting all the way through, leaving the root intact.

  2. 4

    Prepare the Dredging Mixture

In a bowl, combine flour, cayenne pepper, and paprika. In another bowl, pour buttermilk.

  3. 5

    Coat the Onion

Dip the onion in buttermilk, then dredge it in the flour mixture, ensuring it gets into the crevices. Repeat the process to ensure a thick coating.

  4. 6

    Fry the Onion

Heat oil in a deep skillet over medium-high heat. Carefully place the coated onion in the oil and fry for about 5-7 minutes until golden brown. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Cook the Burger Patty

  1. 7

    Cook the Patties

In a skillet or grill over medium-high heat, cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side or until they reach desired doneness. Add a slice of cheddar cheese on top of each patty during the last minute of cooking to melt.

Assemble the Burger

  1. 8

    Build the Burger

On the bottom half of each burger bun, place a lettuce leaf, followed by the cooked patty with melted cheese, sliced tomatoes, and top it with the fried blooming onion. Drizzle with burger sauce if desired and cover with the top bun.
