Baklava Preparation
1. Prepare the Nut Filling
In a food processor, combine the walnuts, sugar, and ground cinnamon. Pulse until the nuts are finely chopped and mixed well. Set aside.
2. Prepare the Phyllo Dough
Thaw the phyllo dough according to package instructions. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Melt the unsalted butter in a small saucepan.
3. Layer the Baklava
On a clean work surface, lay out one sheet of phyllo dough and brush it with melted butter. Repeat this process, layering and buttering, for about 8 sheets. Then, spread a thin layer of the nut filling over the top. Continue layering 4-5 more sheets of phyllo with butter, then add more nut filling. Repeat until all filling is used, finishing with a final layer of about 8 sheets of phyllo, buttering each sheet.
4. Cut and Bake
Using a sharp knife, cut the layered phyllo into triangle shapes. Bake in the preheated oven for about 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown.
5. Prepare the Syrup
While the baklava is baking, combine honey, water, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and let simmer for about 10 minutes. Once the baklava is done baking, remove it from the oven and immediately pour the hot syrup over the hot baklava.
6. Cool and Serve
Allow the baklava to cool completely before serving. This will help the syrup soak into the layers. Cut into triangles and enjoy!
