Preparation Steps
- 1
Prepare the Tomatoes
Slice the green tomatoes into 1/4 inch thick slices. Sprinkle with salt and let them sit for about 10 minutes to draw out excess moisture.
- 2
Set Up Breading Station
In one bowl, place the all-purpose flour mixed with black pepper. In a second bowl, pour the buttermilk. In a third bowl, place the cornmeal.
- 3
Bread the Tomatoes
Dredge each tomato slice in the flour, dip into buttermilk, and finally coat with cornmeal. Set aside on a plate.
- 4
Fry the Tomatoes
In a large skillet, heat the oil over medium heat. Once hot, fry the breaded tomato slices in batches until golden brown on both sides, about 3-4 minutes per side. Drain on paper towels.
- 5
Prepare the Salad
In a large bowl, combine the watercress and chopped fresh herbs. Drizzle with apple cider vinegar and toss gently.
- 6
Assemble the Salad
On a serving platter, arrange the dressed watercress and herbs, then top with the fried green tomatoes. Drizzle ranch dressing over the top and serve immediately.
