California Roll Ingredients

Method

Preparation Instructions

  1. 1

    Prepare the Sushi Rice

Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Combine the rice and water in a rice cooker and cook according to the manufacturer's instructions. Once done, let it cool slightly.

  2. 2

    Season the Rice

In a small bowl, mix together the rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until dissolved. Gently fold this mixture into the warm sushi rice. Let it cool to room temperature.

  3. 3

    Prepare the Fillings

Peel and slice the cucumber and avocado into thin strips. Shred the imitation crab meat if not already shredded.

  4. 4

    Assemble the Rolls

Place a bamboo sushi mat on a flat surface and lay a sheet of nori on it, shiny side down. Wet your hands to prevent sticking and grab a handful of sushi rice, spreading it evenly over the nori, leaving a small border at the top.

  5. 5

    Add Fillings

Place a line of cucumber, avocado, and imitation crab meat across the middle of the rice-covered nori.

  6. 6

    Roll the Sushi

Using the bamboo mat, carefully lift the edge of the mat closest to you and start rolling tightly away from you. Continue rolling until you reach the exposed edge of the nori. Wet the edge with a little water to seal the roll.

  7. 7

    Slice and Serve

Using a sharp knife, slice the roll into 6-8 pieces. Sprinkle sesame seeds on top if desired. Serve with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger.
