Patty Melt Ingredients

Method

Patty Melt Directions

  1. 1

    Caramelize the Onions

In a skillet over medium heat, melt 2 tablespoons of butter. Add the sliced onion and a pinch of salt. Cook, stirring occasionally, until the onions are golden brown and caramelized (about 15-20 minutes). Remove from skillet and set aside.

  2. 2

    Form the Patties

In a bowl, combine the ground beef with salt and pepper. Form the beef into 2 equal patties.

  3. 3

    Cook the Patties

In the same skillet, add another tablespoon of butter and increase the heat to medium-high. Cook the patties for about 4-5 minutes on each side, or until they reach your desired level of doneness. Place a slice of American cheese on top of each patty during the last minute of cooking to melt.

  4. 4

    Assemble the Patty Melt

Spread a little butter on one side of each slice of rye bread. On the unbuttered side of two slices, layer the melted patties, caramelized onions, and a slice of Swiss cheese. Top with the remaining slices of bread, buttered side up.

  5. 5

    Grill the Sandwich

In the same skillet, grill the sandwich over medium heat for about 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is toasted and golden and the cheese is melted. Press down slightly with a spatula while grilling.

  6. 6

    Serve

Remove from the skillet, cut in half, and serve hot.
