Baklava Ingredients

Method

Baklava Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Nut Mixture

In a food processor, combine the walnuts, almonds, and cinnamon. Pulse until finely chopped but not a paste. Set aside.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Phyllo Dough

Thaw the phyllo dough according to package instructions. Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C).

  3. 3

    Layer the Phyllo Dough

Brush a 12-inch round baking dish with melted butter. Layer 10 sheets of phyllo dough, brushing each sheet with melted butter before adding the next. Spread half of the nut mixture over the top.

  4. 4

    Add More Layers

Continue layering 5 more sheets of phyllo, brushing each with butter. Add the remaining nut mixture and top with another 10 sheets of phyllo, each brushed with butter.

  5. 5

    Cut and Bake

Before baking, use a sharp knife to cut the baklava into diamond or square shapes. Bake in the preheated oven for 45-50 minutes, or until golden brown.

  6. 6

    Prepare the Syrup

While the baklava is baking, combine sugar, honey, water, and vanilla extract in a saucepan. Bring to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for 10 minutes. Remove from heat and let cool.

  7. 7

    Soak the Baklava

Once the baklava is done baking, immediately pour the cooled syrup over it. Let it sit for at least 4 hours, or overnight, for the syrup to soak in.
