Cake Layers
- 1
Prepare the Oven and Pans
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour four 9-inch round cake pans.
- 2
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk together until well combined.
- 3
- 4
Incorporate Boiling Water
Carefully stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth (the batter will be thin).
- 5
Bake the Layers
Pour the batter evenly into the prepared cake pans. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
- 6
Cool the Cakes
Remove the cakes from the oven and let cool in the pans for 10 minutes before transferring to a wire rack to cool completely.
Chocolate Sauce
- 7
Heat the Cream
In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream over medium heat until it just begins to simmer.
- 8
Melt the Chocolate
Remove the pan from heat and add the semi-sweet chocolate chips. Let sit for 2 minutes to soften, then stir until smooth.
- 9
Add Vanilla
Stir in the vanilla extract. Set aside to cool slightly before using.
Berries
- 10
Prepare the Berries
Wash and slice the strawberries if they are large. Keep the blueberries and raspberries whole.
Assembly
- 11
Layer the Cakes
Once the cakes have cooled, place one layer on a serving platter. Spread a layer of chocolate sauce on top and add a mix of berries. Repeat with the remaining layers.
- 12
Finish with Chocolate Sauce and Berries
Top the final layer with the remaining chocolate sauce and decorate with additional berries. Let set for a few minutes before serving.
