Method
Cake Preparation
Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and flour four 9-inch round cake pans.
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, granulated sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk until well combined.
Combine Mixtures
Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix until just combined. Gradually stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth.
Bake Layers
Divide the batter evenly among the prepared cake pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
Cool Layers
Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely.
Chocolate Sauce Preparation
Heat Cream
In a small saucepan, heat the heavy cream over medium heat until it begins to simmer.
Melt Chocolate
Remove from heat and add the semi-sweet chocolate chips and butter. Stir until melted and smooth.
Cool Sauce
Let the chocolate sauce sit at room temperature until slightly thickened.
Assembly and Serving
Layer Cakes
Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of chocolate sauce over the top, then add the second layer. Repeat with the third and fourth layers.
Top with Berries
Drizzle additional chocolate sauce over the top of the cake and decorate with fresh berries.
Serve
Slice the cake and serve immediately, or refrigerate until ready to serve.
