Chop the onion, carrot, celery, and bell pepper into small, even pieces. Mince the garlic cloves.

Add Spices
Stir in the cumin, chili powder, salt, and black pepper, cooking for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

Add Beans and Broth
Add the black beans and vegetable broth to the pot. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for 30-35 minutes.

Blend (Optional)
For a smoother texture, use an immersion blender to puree the soup to your desired consistency. If using a regular blender, allow the soup to cool slightly before blending in batches.

Taste the soup and adjust salt and pepper as needed.
