Meat Sauce

Tomato Sauce

Method

Prepare the Meat Sauce

  1. 1

    Sauté the Vegetables

In a large skillet or pot, heat a tablespoon of olive oil over medium heat. Add the chopped onion, carrot, and celery. Sauté for about 5 minutes until the vegetables are softened.

  2. 2

    Add Garlic and Meats

Add the minced garlic, ground beef, and Italian sausage to the skillet. Cook until the meat is browned, breaking it up with a spoon, about 10 minutes.

Prepare the Tomato Sauce

  1. 3

    Combine Ingredients

Once the meat is browned, add the canned crushed tomatoes, tomato paste, dried oregano, dried basil, and red wine. Stir well to combine.

  2. 4

    Season the Sauce

Season the sauce with salt and black pepper to taste. Bring the mixture to a simmer.

  3. 5

    Slow Cook

Reduce the heat to low and cover the pot. Let the sauce simmer for at least 30-45 minutes, stirring occasionally to prevent sticking.

Cook the Pasta

  1. 6

    Boil Water

In a large pot, bring salted water to a boil. Add the spaghetti or fettuccine.

  2. 7

    Cook Pasta

Cook the pasta according to package instructions until al dente, usually about 8-10 minutes. Drain and set aside.

Serve the Dish

  1. 8

    Combine Pasta and Sauce

Add the cooked pasta to the meat sauce and gently toss to coat the pasta evenly.

  2. 9

    Garnish and Serve

Serve the pasta hot, garnished with grated Parmesan cheese and fresh basil or parsley.
