Mussels

Method

Mussels

  1. 1

    Clean the Mussels

Rinse the mussels under cold running water to remove any sand or debris. Discard any mussels that are open and do not close when tapped.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Marinara Sauce

In a large pot, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté until fragrant, about 1-2 minutes.

  3. 3

    Add Spices

Stir in red pepper flakes and cook for an additional 30 seconds.

  4. 4

    Deglaze with Wine

Pour in the white wine and bring to a simmer, allowing the alcohol to cook off for about 5 minutes.

  5. 5

    Add Tomatoes

Add the crushed tomatoes, salt, and black pepper. Let the sauce simmer for 10 minutes to develop flavor.

  6. 6

    Cook the Mussels

Add the cleaned mussels to the pot, cover, and cook for 5-7 minutes, or until the mussels open. Discard any mussels that do not open.

  7. 7

    Finish with Basil

Stir in the fresh basil just before serving.

Toast

  1. 8

    Prepare the Toast

Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C).

  2. 9

    Butter the Bread

Slice the Italian bread in half lengthwise. Spread butter evenly on each half and sprinkle with garlic powder.

  3. 10

    Toast the Bread

Place the bread on a baking sheet and toast in the oven for 8-10 minutes, or until golden brown.
