Preparation

1. Prepare the Steak

Take the New York Strip Steak out of the refrigerator and let it sit at room temperature for about 30 minutes before cooking. This helps in even cooking.

2. Season the Steak

Pat the steak dry with paper towels, then season both sides generously with kosher salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.

Cooking

3. Heat the Pan

In a large cast-iron skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium-high heat until it shimmers.

4. Sear the Steak

Carefully place the steak in the hot skillet. Sear for about 4-5 minutes on one side without moving it, until a deep brown crust forms.

5. Flip and Add Flavor

Flip the steak using tongs, then add 2 tablespoons of butter, fresh rosemary, and fresh thyme to the pan. Cook for another 4-5 minutes for medium-rare, basting the steak with melted butter using a spoon.

6. Check for Doneness

Use a meat thermometer to check the internal temperature; it should read 130°F (54°C) for medium-rare. Adjust cooking time as necessary.

7. Rest the Steak

Remove the steak from the skillet and transfer it to a cutting board. Let it rest for at least 10 minutes before slicing.

Serving

8. Slice and Serve

Slice the steak against the grain into thick slices and serve with your choice of sides. Enjoy your perfectly cooked New York Strip!
