Pretzels

Method

Pretzel Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate Yeast

In a bowl, combine warm water, sugar, and active dry yeast. Allow it to sit for about 5-10 minutes until frothy.

  2. 2

    Make Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Add the yeast mixture and mix until a dough forms. Knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth.

  3. 3

    First Rise

Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

  4. 4

    Shape Pretzels

Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C). Roll the dough into ropes and shape them into pretzels.

  5. 5

    Baking Soda Bath

In a large pot, bring 10 cups of water and baking soda to a boil. Boil each pretzel for 30 seconds, then remove and place on a baking sheet.

  6. 6

    Bake

Brush the pretzels with melted butter and sprinkle with coarse sea salt. Bake for about 12-15 minutes until golden brown.
