Method

Soup Preparation

  1. 1

    Sauté the Onions

In a large pot, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced yellow onions and stir to coat. Cook for about 20-25 minutes, stirring occasionally, until the onions are caramelized and golden brown.

  2. 2

    Add Garlic

Mince the garlic cloves and add them to the pot. Cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until fragrant.

  3. 3

    Deglaze with Wine

Pour in the dry white wine, scraping the bottom of the pot to deglaze. Allow the wine to reduce for about 5 minutes.

  4. 4

    Add Broth and Seasonings

Add the beef broth, fresh thyme, bay leaf, salt, and black pepper. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 30-40 minutes.

  5. 5

    Remove Bay Leaf

After simmering, remove the bay leaf and adjust seasoning to taste.

Crouton Preparation

  1. 6

    Prepare Croutons

Preheat your oven to 375°F (190°C). Cut the baguette into 1-inch cubes and place them in a bowl. Drizzle with olive oil, sprinkle with garlic powder and salt, and toss to coat.

  2. 7

    Bake Croutons

Spread the coated bread cubes evenly on a baking sheet. Bake for about 10-15 minutes, or until golden brown and crispy.

Assembly and Serving

  1. 8

    Serve the Soup

Ladle the hot French onion soup into bowls. Top each serving with a generous amount of Swiss cheese.

  2. 9

    Add Croutons

Place a few croutons on top of the cheese, and place the bowls under the broiler for 2-3 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

  3. 10

    Enjoy

Serve immediately while hot, and enjoy your delicious homemade French onion soup!
