For the Calamari

For the Spicy Marinara Sauce

Method

Preparing the Calamari

  1. 1

    Clean and Cut the Calamari

Begin by cleaning the fresh calamari. Remove the head and tentacles, and discard the insides. Rinse the body and tentacles under cold water and slice the body into rings about 1/2 inch thick.

  2. 2

    Prepare the Breading

In a large bowl, combine all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, paprika, and garlic powder. Mix well to combine.

  3. 3

    Make the Egg Wash

In another bowl, whisk together the egg and milk until fully combined.

  4. 4

    Bread the Calamari

Dip each calamari ring into the egg wash, then into the flour mixture, ensuring they are fully coated. Set aside on a plate.

Cooking the Calamari

  1. 5

    Heat the Oil

In a deep frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  2. 6

    Fry the Calamari

Carefully add the breaded calamari rings in small batches to the hot oil. Fry for 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.

Making the Spicy Marinara Sauce

  1. 7

    Sauté Garlic

In a saucepan, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add minced garlic and sauté for about 1 minute, or until fragrant.

  2. 8

    Add Tomatoes and Seasonings

Stir in the crushed tomatoes, red pepper flakes, dried oregano, and salt. Bring to a simmer and let cook for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally.

  3. 9

    Finish the Sauce

Remove from heat and stir in the fresh chopped basil. Adjust seasoning to taste.

Serving

  1. 10

    Plate the Dish

Serve the fried calamari hot with the spicy marinara sauce on the side for dipping.
