Method
Preparation of Dough
- 1
Activate Yeast
In a small bowl, combine 1.5 cups of warm water (about 110°F/43°C) with 1 tablespoon of active dry yeast. Stir gently and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- 2
Mix Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine 4 cups of all-purpose flour and 2 teaspoons of salt. Stir to mix well.
- 3
Combine Wet and Dry Ingredients
Once the yeast is activated, pour the yeast mixture into the dry ingredients. Mix with a wooden spoon or spatula until a sticky dough forms.
- 4
Fermentation
- 5
First Rise
Cover the bowl with plastic wrap or a damp cloth and let it rise in a warm place for 1 to 2 hours, or until it doubles in size.
Shaping and Second Rise
- 6
Shape the Dough
Once the dough has doubled in size, gently turn it out onto a well-floured surface. Dust your hands with flour and divide the dough into two pieces. Shape each piece into a rectangle without deflating it too much.
- 7
Second Rise
Place the shaped dough pieces on a semolina-dusted baking sheet. Cover lightly with a cloth and let them rise for another 30-45 minutes.
Baking
- 8
Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 450°F (230°C). If you have a baking stone, place it in the oven to heat.
- 9
Bake the Bread
Once the oven is preheated, carefully transfer the dough onto the baking stone or a baking sheet. Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the bread is golden brown and sounds hollow when tapped.
- 10
Cool the Bread
Remove the bread from the oven and let it cool on a wire rack for at least 30 minutes before slicing.
