Method
Preparation and Baking
- 1
Preheat the Oven
Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Line a baking sheet with parchment paper.
- 2
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
- 3
Cut in the Butter
Add the cold, cubed butter to the dry ingredients. Use a pastry cutter or your fingers to mix until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
- 4
Add Wet Ingredients
Stir in the cranberries, walnuts, and orange zest. Then, pour in the buttermilk and mix until just combined.
- 5
Shape the Dough
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and gently knead it a few times until it comes together. Pat it into a 1-inch thick round.
- 6
Cut the Scones
Cut the dough into wedges or use a biscuit cutter to make rounds. Place them on the prepared baking sheet.
- 7
Bake
Bake in the preheated oven for 15-20 minutes, or until golden brown.
- 8
Prepare the Whipped Orange-Nutmeg Crème Fraîche
While the scones are baking, whip together crème fraîche, orange juice, and nutmeg to taste until light and fluffy.
- 9
Serve
Serve the warm scones with the whipped orange-nutmeg crème fraîche.
