Instructions
Prepare the Okra
Wash and slice the okra into 1/2 inch pieces. Set aside.
Soak in Buttermilk
Place the sliced okra in a bowl and pour the buttermilk over it. Let it soak for about 15 minutes.
Mix the Coating
In a separate bowl, combine the cornmeal, flour, salt, black pepper, and cayenne pepper. Mix well.
Coat the Okra
Remove the okra from the buttermilk, allowing excess to drip off. Toss the okra in the cornmeal mixture until well coated.
Heat the Oil
In a large skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).
Fry the Okra
Carefully add the coated okra to the hot oil in batches, frying for about 3-4 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
Serve
Serve the buttermilk fried okra hot, seasoned with additional salt if desired.
