Bread Base

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Prepare the Bread

If using fresh bread, cut it into cubes and toast them in the oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 15 minutes until golden and dry. If using stale bread, skip this step.

  2. 2

    Chop Vegetables

Chop the onion, celery, and garlic. Measure out the spices and herbs.

Cooking

  1. 3

    Sauté Vegetables

In a large skillet, melt the unsalted butter over medium heat. Add the chopped onion and celery. Sauté for about 5-7 minutes until they are soft and translucent. Add the minced garlic and sauté for another 1-2 minutes until fragrant.

  2. 4

    Combine Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the toasted bread cubes, sautéed vegetables, chopped parsley, sage, thyme, salt, and pepper. If using, add dried cranberries and nuts.

  3. 5

    Add Broth

Pour the chicken or vegetable broth over the mixture, stirring gently until the bread is moistened but not soggy. Adjust seasoning to taste.

Baking

  1. 6

    Transfer to Baking Dish

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Transfer the stuffing mixture to a greased baking dish.

  2. 7

    Bake the Stuffing

Cover the dish with aluminum foil and bake for 30 minutes. Remove the foil and bake for an additional 15-20 minutes until the top is crispy and golden.
