Cheddar Topping
Method
Making the Bread Dough
- 1
Activate Yeast
In a small bowl, combine warm water (1.5 cups), sugar (1 tsp), and active dry yeast (2 tsp). Stir gently and let sit for about 10 minutes until foamy.
- 2
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together all-purpose flour (4 cups) and salt (2 tsp).
- 3
Combine Ingredients
Make a well in the center of the flour mixture. Pour in the activated yeast mixture and olive oil (2 tbs).
- 4
Knead the Dough
Mix until a dough forms, then knead on a floured surface for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- 5
First Rise
Place the dough in a lightly oiled bowl, cover with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Adding Cheddar Topping
- 6
Prepare Topping
While the dough is rising, prepare the cheddar topping by mixing melted butter (2 tbs), garlic powder (1 tsp), and black pepper (0.5 tsp) in a small bowl. Stir in sharp cheddar cheese (1.5 cups) until well combined.
- 7
Shape the Bread
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it onto a floured surface. Shape it into a long loaf or desired shape.
- 8
Second Rise
Place the shaped dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Cover and let it rise for another 30 minutes.
- 9
Preheat Oven
Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C) during the second rise.
- 10
Add Topping and Bake
After the second rise, spread the cheddar mixture evenly on top of the loaf. Bake in the preheated oven for 25-30 minutes until golden brown and the cheese is bubbly.
