Preparation
1. Rinse the Cranberries
Place the fresh cranberries in a colander and rinse them under cold water to remove any dirt or debris. Discard any damaged or soft cranberries.
2. Zest and Juice the Orange
Using a zester or grater, zest the orange to obtain about 1 tablespoon of zest. Then, cut the orange in half and juice it to yield approximately 1/4 cup of fresh orange juice. Set both the zest and juice aside.
Cooking
3. Combine Ingredients
In a medium saucepan, combine the rinsed cranberries, granulated sugar, brown sugar, water, orange juice, cinnamon, and nutmeg. Stir to combine.
4. Cook the Sauce
Place the saucepan over medium heat and bring the mixture to a boil. Once boiling, reduce the heat to low and let it simmer for about 10-15 minutes, stirring occasionally, until most of the cranberries have burst and the sauce has thickened.
5. Add Orange Zest
Once the sauce has thickened, remove it from the heat and stir in the orange zest. Allow the sauce to cool to room temperature.
Serving
6. Serve
Transfer the cooled cranberry sauce to a serving dish or jar. It can be served immediately or stored in the refrigerator for up to one week.
