Biscuits

Method

Biscuits

  1. 1

    Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).

  2. 2

    Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, baking powder, baking soda, and salt. Whisk together until well combined.

  3. 3

    Cut in Butter

Add the cold unsalted butter to the dry ingredients. Using a pastry cutter or your fingers, cut the butter into the flour mixture until it resembles coarse crumbs.

  4. 4

    Add Buttermilk

Make a well in the center of the dry mixture and pour in the buttermilk. Stir gently until the dough comes together, being careful not to overmix.

  5. 5

    Shape the Biscuits

Turn the dough onto a lightly floured surface and gently knead it a few times until it is cohesive. Pat the dough to about 1-inch thickness. Use a biscuit cutter to cut out biscuits.

  6. 6

    Bake the Biscuits

Place the biscuits on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper. Bake in the preheated oven for 12-15 minutes or until golden brown.

Gravy

  1. 7

    Cook the Sausage

In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the breakfast sausage until browned and crumbled, about 5-7 minutes.

  2. 8

    Make the Roux

Sprinkle the flour over the cooked sausage and stir to combine. Cook for about 1-2 minutes to get rid of the raw flour taste.

  3. 9

    Add Milk

Slowly pour in the milk while stirring continuously to avoid lumps. Bring the mixture to a simmer.

  4. 10

    Season the Gravy

Add salt, black pepper, and red pepper flakes to the sausage mixture. Stir until the gravy thickens, about 5-7 minutes.

  5. 11

    Serve

Once the gravy is thickened, remove it from heat. Serve the hot biscuits topped with the sausage gravy.
