Gelato and Toppings
Method
Preparation Steps
- 1
Make the Gelato Base
In a medium saucepan, combine the whole milk, heavy cream, and granulated sugar. Heat over medium heat, stirring until the sugar is completely dissolved. Remove from heat and stir in the vanilla extract.
- 2
Chill the Mixture
Allow the mixture to cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 2 hours or until thoroughly chilled.
- 3
Churn the Gelato
Once chilled, pour the mixture into an ice cream maker and churn according to the manufacturer's instructions until it reaches a soft-serve consistency.
- 4
Add Chocolate Chips
During the last few minutes of churning, add the semisweet chocolate chips to the gelato.
- 5
Layer with Chocolate Syrup
Transfer half of the gelato to a storage container. Drizzle half of the chocolate syrup over it. Add the remaining gelato on top and drizzle with the rest of the chocolate syrup. Use a knife to swirl the syrup into the gelato slightly.
- 6
Freeze
Cover the container and freeze for at least 4 hours to firm up the gelato.
- 7
Serve
Scoop the gelato into bowls, dust with cocoa powder, and sprinkle chopped hazelnuts on top before serving.
