Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Cook the Ziti

In a large pot of boiling salted water, cook the ziti pasta according to package instructions until al dente. Drain and set aside.

Meat Sauce

  1. 2

    Cook the Sausage

In a large skillet, heat olive oil over medium heat. Add the Italian sausage links and cook until browned on all sides. Remove from the skillet, slice into rounds, and set aside.

  2. 3

    Sauté Vegetables

In the same skillet, add minced garlic, chopped onion, and sliced bell peppers. Sauté until the vegetables are soft, about 5-7 minutes.

  3. 4

    Combine Ingredients

Add the canned crushed tomatoes, Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper to the skillet. Stir to combine and let simmer for 10 minutes. Add the sliced sausage back into the sauce and mix well.

Cheese Mixture

  1. 5

    Prepare Cheese Mixture

In a mixing bowl, combine ricotta cheese, egg, and grated Parmesan cheese. Mix until smooth and well combined.

Assembly

  1. 6

    Combine Ziti with Sauce

In a large mixing bowl, combine the cooked ziti pasta with the meat sauce. Mix until the pasta is well coated.

  2. 7

    Layering

In a greased baking dish, add half of the ziti and meat sauce mixture. Spread half of the ricotta cheese mixture over the top, followed by half of the shredded mozzarella cheese. Repeat the layers with the remaining ingredients.

Baking

  1. 8

    Bake the Ziti

Preheat the oven to 350°F (175°C). Cover the baking dish with aluminum foil and bake for 25 minutes. Remove the foil, sprinkle the remaining mozzarella cheese on top, and bake for an additional 15 minutes until the cheese is bubbly and golden.

  2. 9

    Garnish and Serve

Once baked, remove from the oven and let sit for 5 minutes. Garnish with fresh chopped basil before serving.
