Pasta & cheese mix

Liquid & fat

Method

Pasta & boiling

  1. 1

    Boil water

Pour 4 cups of water into a medium saucepan and bring to a rolling boil over high heat.

  2. 2

    Cook macaroni

Add 1 cup dry elbow macaroni and 1/4 tsp salt to the boiling water. Stir immediately to prevent sticking. Return to a boil and cook uncovered, stirring occasionally, for 7-8 minutes until the pasta is tender but still slightly firm (follow package timing if different).

  3. 3

    Drain

Reserve about 2 tablespoons of the cooking water (optional), then drain the macaroni in a colander and return it to the saucepan off the heat.

Sauce & finishing

  1. 4

    Add butter and milk

To the hot drained macaroni in the saucepan, add 2 tablespoons butter and 1 cup milk. Stir until the butter is melted and the mixture is warmed through (about 30-60 seconds).

  2. 5

    Stir in cheese powder

Open the Kraft cheese powder packet and sprinkle the entire contents over the macaroni. Stir vigorously until the cheese powder is fully incorporated and the sauce is smooth. If the sauce seems too thick, add up to 1-2 tablespoons of reserved pasta water or milk to reach desired creaminess.

  3. 6

    Optional add-ins

If using, stir in 1/2 cup grated cheddar for extra cheesiness, 1/8 tsp black pepper, and 1/4 tsp dry mustard. Taste and adjust seasoning — add a pinch more salt if needed.

  4. 7

    Serve

Transfer to bowls and serve immediately while hot.
