Maki Ingredients

Method

Maki Preparation Directions

  1. 1

    Prepare Sushi Rice

Rinse the sushi rice under cold water until the water runs clear. Cook the rice according to the package instructions. Once cooked, let it cool slightly. In a small bowl, mix rice vinegar, sugar, and salt until dissolved, then fold it into the rice gently.

  2. 2

    Prepare Fillings

Julienne the cucumber, avocado, and carrot into thin strips. If using crab sticks, shred them into smaller pieces.

  3. 3

    Assemble Maki

Place a bamboo sushi mat on a flat surface. Place a nori sheet shiny side down. With wet hands, spread a thin layer of sushi rice over the nori, leaving a 1-inch border at the top. Lay your fillings (cucumber, avocado, carrot, crab) horizontally across the middle of the rice.

  4. 4

    Roll Maki

Using the bamboo mat, carefully roll the nori away from you, pressing gently but firmly to keep the roll tight. Continue rolling until you reach the border of the nori. Moisten the edge with a little water to seal the roll.

  5. 5

    Slice and Serve

With a sharp knife, slice the roll into 6-8 pieces. Serve with soy sauce, wasabi, and pickled ginger.
