Hushpuppies

Whipped Honey Butter

Method

Hushpuppies

  1. 1

    Prepare the Batter

In a large mixing bowl, combine cornmeal, all-purpose flour, baking powder, sugar, salt, and black pepper. Mix well until dry ingredients are fully combined.

  2. 2

    Add Wet Ingredients

Add the finely chopped onion, buttermilk, and beaten egg to the dry ingredients. Stir until just combined; do not overmix. The batter should be thick and slightly lumpy.

  3. 3

    Heat the Oil

In a deep skillet or large pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

  4. 4

    Fry the Hushpuppies

Using a tablespoon or a small cookie scoop, drop spoonfuls of the batter into the hot oil. Fry in batches, being careful not to overcrowd the pot. Cook for about 2-3 minutes on each side or until golden brown.

  5. 5

    Drain and Serve

Once golden brown, remove hushpuppies with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Keep warm until all are fried.

Whipped Honey Butter

  1. 6

    Prepare the Butter

In a medium bowl, use an electric mixer to beat the softened butter until creamy and smooth.

  2. 7

    Add Honey and Cinnamon

Add the honey and cinnamon to the whipped butter. Continue to beat until well combined and fluffy.

  3. 8

    Serve

Transfer the whipped honey butter to a serving dish and serve alongside the warm hushpuppies.
