For the Calamari
For the Spicy Marinara Sauce
Method
For the Calamari
- 1
Prepare the Calamari
Rinse the cleaned squid under cold water and pat dry with paper towels. Cut into 1/2-inch rings.
- 2
Mix the Dry Ingredients
In a large bowl, combine the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, and paprika. Mix well.
- 3
Coat the Calamari
Dip the squid rings into the beaten eggs, allowing excess to drip off. Then, dredge them in the flour mixture until evenly coated.
- 4
Heat the Oil
In a large, deep skillet, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until hot, about 350°F (175°C).
- 5
Fry the Calamari
Fry the calamari in batches, avoiding overcrowding the pan, for about 2-3 minutes or until golden brown and crispy. Remove with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels.
For the Spicy Marinara Sauce
- 6
- 7
Add the Tomatoes and Spices
Stir in the crushed tomatoes, red pepper flakes, dried oregano, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a simmer.
- 8
Simmer the Sauce
Reduce the heat and let the sauce simmer for about 15-20 minutes, stirring occasionally until thickened.
- 9
Finish the Sauce
Stir in the chopped fresh basil just before serving.
