Main Ingredients

Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Clean the Mussels

Rinse the fresh mussels under cold water, scrubbing the shells to remove any dirt or debris. Remove beards (the fibrous strands) by pulling them towards the hinge of the shell.

Cooking

  1. 2

    Sauté Garlic

In a large pot over medium heat, heat the olive oil. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1-2 minutes until fragrant but not browned.

  2. 3

    Add Red Pepper Flakes

Stir in the crushed red pepper flakes and cook for an additional 30 seconds to release their flavor.

  3. 4

    Deglaze with Wine

Pour in the white wine, scraping up any bits stuck to the bottom of the pot. Allow the wine to simmer for about 2-3 minutes.

  4. 5

    Add Tomatoes

Stir in the canned crushed tomatoes, fresh basil, salt, and black pepper. Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer.

  5. 6

    Cook Mussels

Add the cleaned mussels to the pot, cover, and cook for 5-7 minutes or until the mussels have opened up. Discard any mussels that remain closed.

  6. 7

    Serve

Ladle the mussels and sauce into bowls, ensuring to include plenty of sauce. Garnish with additional fresh basil if desired.
