Method

Directions

  1. 1

    Prepare the Onions

Peel and slice the yellow onions into thin rings.

  2. 2

    Sauté the Onions

In a large pot, melt the butter and olive oil over medium heat. Add the sliced onions and cook, stirring occasionally, for about 25-30 minutes or until the onions are caramelized and golden brown.

  3. 3

    Add Garlic

Stir in the minced garlic and cook for an additional 2-3 minutes until fragrant.

  4. 4

    Deglaze with Wine

Pour in the dry white wine, scraping up any browned bits from the bottom of the pot. Let it simmer for about 5 minutes until slightly reduced.

  5. 5

    Add Broth and Seasonings

Add the beef broth, thyme leaves, bay leaf, salt, and black pepper. Bring to a boil, then reduce the heat and let it simmer for 30-40 minutes.

  6. 6

    Prepare Bread

While the soup simmers, preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Place the slices of French baguette on a baking sheet and toast them in the oven for about 5-7 minutes until golden brown.

  7. 7

    Serve the Soup

Remove the bay leaf from the soup. Ladle the hot soup into oven-safe bowls, place a toasted slice of baguette on top of each bowl, and sprinkle with shredded Gruyère cheese.

  8. 8

    Broil the Cheese

Put the bowls under the broiler for about 3-5 minutes, or until the cheese is melted and bubbly. Watch closely to prevent burning.

  9. 9

    Enjoy

Remove from the oven and let cool slightly before serving. Enjoy your delicious French onion soup!
