Method
Preparing the Tofu
- 1
Press the Tofu
Wrap the firm tofu in a clean kitchen towel or paper towels. Place a heavy object on top (like a cast-iron skillet) to press out excess moisture for about 30 minutes.
- 2
Cut the Tofu
Once pressed, cut the tofu into bite-sized cubes, approximately 1 inch each.
- 3
Coat with Cornstarch
In a large bowl, toss the tofu cubes with 1 cup of cornstarch until evenly coated.
Cooking the Tofu
- 4
Heat the Oil
In a large skillet or wok, heat 1 cup of vegetable oil over medium-high heat until hot.
- 5
Fry the Tofu
Carefully add the tofu cubes to the hot oil. Fry in batches, ensuring not to overcrowd the pan, for about 3-4 minutes on each side or until golden brown and crispy. Remove and drain on paper towels.
Making the Honey Sauce
- 6
Combine Ingredients
In a small saucepan over medium heat, combine 1 cup of honey, 1 tablespoon of soy sauce, 1 tablespoon of rice vinegar, 1 teaspoon of sesame oil, minced garlic, and grated ginger.
- 7
Thicken the Sauce
In a small bowl, mix 1 teaspoon of cornstarch with 2 tablespoons of water to create a slurry. Add this to the saucepan, stirring continuously until the sauce thickens, about 3-5 minutes.
Serving the Dish
- 8
Combine Tofu and Sauce
In a large bowl, add the fried tofu cubes and drizzle the thickened honey sauce over them. Toss gently to coat the tofu evenly.
- 9
Garnish and Serve
Sprinkle sesame seeds and sliced green onions on top of the coated tofu. Serve immediately.
