Caramel
Custard
Method
Caramel Preparation
- 1
Make the Caramel
In a saucepan over medium heat, combine 1 cup of granulated sugar and 1 cup of water. Stir gently to dissolve the sugar.
- 2
Cook the Caramel
Allow the mixture to boil without stirring. Watch closely as it changes color to a golden amber, about 10-15 minutes.
- 3
Cool the Caramel
Once the desired color is reached, remove from heat. Quickly pour the caramel into a round baking dish, tilting to coat the bottom evenly. Set aside to cool.
Custard Preparation
- 4
Prepare the Custard Mixture
In a mixing bowl, whisk together 4 large eggs until well beaten. Gradually add in 1 can of sweetened condensed milk, 1 can of evaporated milk, and 1 tsp of vanilla extract, whisking until smooth.
- 5
Combine with Caramel
Once the caramel has cooled, pour the custard mixture over the caramel in the baking dish.

Bake the Flan
Bake in the preheated oven for 50-60 minutes, or until the flan is set and a knife inserted in the center comes out clean.
- 8
Cool and Unmold
Remove the flan from the oven and let it cool in the water bath for about 30 minutes. Then refrigerate for at least 4 hours or overnight. To serve, run a knife around the edges and invert onto a serving plate.
