Prepare the batter
In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Gradually add cold water, mixing until a smooth batter forms.

Heat the oil
In a deep skillet or frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 350°F (175°C).

Batter the mushrooms
Dip each button mushroom into the batter, ensuring they are well coated.

Fry the mushrooms
Carefully place the battered mushrooms into the hot oil in batches, frying until golden brown and crispy, about 3-4 minutes per batch.

Drain and serve
Remove the fried mushrooms with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Serve hot with homemade ranch dressing.
