Method

Preparation and Cooking

  1. 1

    Prepare the Calamari

Clean and cut the calamari into rings or strips, if not pre-cut.

  2. 2

    Make the Batter

In a mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour, cornstarch, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. In another bowl, whisk the egg and water together, then add to the dry ingredients. Mix until smooth.

  3. 3

    Heat the Oil

In a deep frying pan or pot, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until it reaches 180°C (350°F).

  4. 4

    Fry the Calamari

Dip the calamari pieces into the batter, allowing any excess to drip off. Carefully drop them into the hot oil, frying in batches to avoid overcrowding. Fry until golden brown and crispy, about 2-3 minutes.

  5. 5

    Drain and Serve

Remove the fried calamari with a slotted spoon and drain on paper towels. Serve hot with lemon wedges, soy sauce, and mayonnaise for dipping.
