Prepare the batter
In a large bowl, whisk together the all-purpose flour, cornstarch, baking powder, salt, and black pepper. Gradually add the beer and stir until smooth.

Heat the oil
In a deep fryer or large pot, heat the vegetable oil to 350°F (175°C).

Batter the fish
Dip each cod fillet into the batter, ensuring it's well-coated.

Fry the fish
Carefully place the battered cod fillets into the hot oil and fry until golden brown, about 4-5 minutes. Remove and drain on paper towels.

Cook the fries
While the fish is frying, prepare the frozen French fries according to package instructions, either baking or frying.

Make the tartar sauce
In a small bowl, mix together mayonnaise, dill pickle relish, and lemon juice. Set aside.

Serve
Plate the fried fish with French fries, coleslaw, and a generous side of tartar sauce.
