Method

Preparing the Cake

1

Preheat the Oven

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease two 9-inch round cake pans.

2

Mix Dry Ingredients

In a large mixing bowl, sift together the flour, sugar, cocoa powder, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.

3

Combine Wet Ingredients

In a separate bowl, mix together the eggs, milk, oil, and vanilla extract until well combined.

4

Combine Mixtures

Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, mixing until just combined. Stir in the boiling water until the batter is smooth.

5

Bake the Cake

Divide the batter evenly between the prepared pans. Bake for 30-35 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.

6

Cool the Cake

Allow the cakes to cool in the pans for 10 minutes, then turn them out onto wire racks to cool completely.

Making the Ganache

7

Heat the Cream

In a saucepan, heat the heavy cream until it just begins to simmer.

8

Melt the Chocolate

Remove the cream from heat and add the semi-sweet chocolate chips. Stir until the chocolate is melted and the mixture is smooth.

9

Add Cocoa Powder

Stir in the cocoa powder until fully incorporated. Allow to cool for a few minutes.

Making the Frosting

10

Beat Butter

In a mixing bowl, beat the softened butter until creamy.

11

Add Cocoa and Sugar

Gradually add the cocoa powder and powdered sugar, mixing until well combined.

12

Add Milk and Vanilla

Add the milk and vanilla extract, mixing until the frosting is smooth and spreadable.

Assembling the Cake

13

Layer the Cakes

Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread a layer of ganache over the top.

14

Frost the Cake

Place the second cake layer on top and frost the top and sides of the cake with the chocolate frosting.

15

Decorate

Drizzle any remaining ganache over the top of the frosted cake and serve.
