Method
Dough Preparation
- 1
Activate Yeast
In a small bowl, combine warm water and active dry yeast. Let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.
- 2
Mix Dry Ingredients
In a large mixing bowl, combine all-purpose flour and salt.
- 3
Combine Ingredients
Add the frothy yeast mixture and olive oil to the flour mixture. Stir until a dough begins to form.
- 4
Knead Dough
Turn the dough out onto a floured surface and knead for about 8-10 minutes until smooth and elastic.
- 5
First Rise
Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover it with a damp cloth, and let it rise in a warm place for 1 hour or until doubled in size.
Assembly & Baking
- 6
Preheat Oven
Preheat your oven to 475°F (245°C). If you have a pizza stone, place it in the oven to heat.
- 7
Prepare Sauce
In a bowl, mix crushed tomatoes with salt and black pepper to taste.
- 8
Shape Dough
Once the dough has risen, punch it down and turn it out onto a floured surface. Roll or stretch it into a 12-inch circle.
- 9
Add Sauce and Cheese
Transfer the dough to a parchment-lined baking sheet or a pizza peel. Spread the tomato sauce evenly over the dough, leaving a small border. Tear fresh mozzarella into pieces and distribute it evenly on top.
- 10
Bake Pizza
Carefully transfer the pizza to the oven (or onto the preheated pizza stone) and bake for 10-12 minutes or until the crust is golden and cheese is bubbling.
- 11
Add Basil
Remove the pizza from the oven and immediately scatter fresh basil leaves on top. Drizzle with olive oil before slicing.
