Method
Prepare the Burger Patties
- 1
Drain and Rinse Beans
Open the canned black beans and drain the liquid. Rinse them under cold water to remove excess sodium.
- 2
Mash the Beans
In a mixing bowl, mash the drained black beans using a fork or potato masher until mostly smooth, leaving some chunks for texture.
- 3
- 4
Form Patties
With your hands, form the mixture into two equal-sized patties. Ensure they hold together well.
- 5
Cook Patties
Heat olive oil in a non-stick skillet over medium heat. Cook the patties for about 5 minutes on each side, or until golden brown and heated through.
Assemble the Burger
- 6
Prepare the Buns
While the patties are cooking, slice the whole wheat burger buns in half and toast them lightly if desired.
- 7
Layer Ingredients
On the bottom half of each bun, place a leaf of lettuce, a cooked veggie patty, a slice of tomato, and some slices of red onion.
- 8
Complete the Burger
Top with the other half of the bun and press lightly to hold everything together.
