Preparing the Burger Patty

Mix the Ingredients
In a mixing bowl, combine the ground beef, salt, black pepper, and garlic powder. Use your hands to mix until just combined, being careful not to overwork the meat.

Form the Patty
Divide the meat mixture into two equal portions and shape each into a round patty that is about 1 inch thick. Press a slight indentation in the center of each patty to help them cook evenly.

Prepare the Bun
While the burger is cooking, slice the burger bun in half and toast it lightly on the grill or in a toaster, if desired.

Add Toppings
Once the burger patty is cooked and the cheese is melted, place the patty on the bottom half of the toasted bun. Top with a leaf of lettuce, a slice of tomato, a slice of onion, and finally, place the top half of the bun on the burger.
