Dough

Method

Dough Preparation

  1. 1

    Activate Yeast

In a small bowl, combine warm water and sugar. Sprinkle the yeast over the top and let it sit for about 5-10 minutes until it becomes frothy.

  2. 2

    Make Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine flour and salt. Create a well in the center and add the yeast mixture and olive oil. Mix until a dough forms.

  3. 3

    Knead Dough

Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5-7 minutes until smooth and elastic. Place in a greased bowl, cover with a cloth, and let rise in a warm place for about 1 hour or until doubled in size.

Filling Preparation

  1. 4

    Cook Meat

In a large skillet over medium heat, cook the ground beef and Italian sausage until browned. Drain excess fat.

  2. 5

    Sauté Vegetables

Add chopped onion, minced garlic, and bell pepper to the skillet with the meat. Cook for about 5 minutes until the vegetables are softened.

  3. 6

    Mix Filling

Stir in Italian seasoning, salt, and black pepper. Remove from heat and let cool slightly, then fold in mozzarella and parmesan cheese.

Assembly and Baking

  1. 7

    Preheat Oven

Preheat your oven to 425°F (220°C).

  2. 8

    Roll Out Dough

Once the dough has risen, punch it down and divide it into 4 equal pieces. Roll each piece into a circle about 8 inches in diameter.

  3. 9

    Fill Calzone

Place a generous amount of filling on one half of each dough circle, leaving a border. Brush the edges with the beaten egg, fold over, and press to seal.

  4. 10

    Prepare for Baking

Place the calzones on a greased baking sheet. Brush the tops with the remaining beaten egg and sprinkle with additional parmesan cheese.

  5. 11

    Bake

Bake in the preheated oven for 20-25 minutes or until golden brown. Let cool for a few minutes before serving.
