Method
Cooking the Pasta
- 1
Boil the Pasta
Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the penne pasta and cook according to package instructions until al dente, usually around 10-12 minutes. Stir occasionally to prevent sticking.
- 2
Drain the Pasta
Once cooked, drain the pasta in a colander and set aside. Reserve a cup of the pasta water for later use if needed.
Making the Sauce
- 3
Sauté Garlic
In a large skillet, heat the olive oil over medium heat. Add the minced garlic and sauté for about 1-2 minutes until fragrant, being careful not to burn it.
- 4
Add Tomatoes
Pour in the canned whole tomatoes, including the juice. Use a wooden spoon to break the tomatoes into smaller pieces. Add salt and black pepper, stirring to combine.
- 5
Simmer the Sauce
Bring the sauce to a gentle simmer and let it cook for about 15 minutes, stirring occasionally until it thickens slightly.
- 6
Add Basil
Tear the fresh basil leaves and stir them into the sauce during the last few minutes of cooking for added flavor.
Combining Pasta and Sauce
- 7
Mix Pasta with Sauce
Add the drained penne pasta to the skillet with the sauce. Toss well to coat the pasta evenly with the sauce. If the sauce is too thick, add a little reserved pasta water to reach desired consistency.
- 8
Serve
Plate the Penne Pomodoro and sprinkle with grated Parmesan cheese. Garnish with additional fresh basil if desired. Serve immediately.
