Sopapilla Ingredients

Method

Preparation Directions

  1. 1

    Make the Dough

In a large mixing bowl, combine the flour, baking powder, salt, and sugar. Mix well. Add the vegetable oil and warm water, then stir until a soft dough forms.

  2. 2

    Knead the Dough

Turn the dough onto a floured surface and knead for about 5 minutes until smooth. Cover with a clean towel and let it rest for 30 minutes.

  3. 3

    Roll Out the Dough

After resting, divide the dough into four equal pieces. Roll each piece out to about 1/4 inch thickness.

  4. 4

    Cut the Dough

Cut each rolled-out piece into squares or triangles, about 4 inches wide.

  5. 5

    Heat the Oil

In a deep frying pan, heat the vegetable oil over medium-high heat until hot (about 350°F or 175°C).

  6. 6

    Fry the Sopapillas

Carefully place the cut dough pieces into the hot oil. Fry until they puff up and turn golden brown, about 1-2 minutes per side. Remove and drain on paper towels.

  7. 7

    Serve

Serve warm, drizzled with honey to taste.
