Method

Preparation

  1. 1

    Steep the Hibiscus Flowers

In a large pot, bring 8 cups of water to a boil. Once boiling, remove from heat and add 1 cup of dried hibiscus flowers. Stir and let steep for about 15-20 minutes until the water turns a deep red color.

  2. 2

    Strain the Mixture

After steeping, strain the mixture through a fine-mesh sieve or cheesecloth into a large pitcher to remove the hibiscus flowers. Discard the flowers.

  3. 3

    Sweeten the Tea

While the tea is still warm, add 1 cup of sugar and stir until completely dissolved. If you prefer a less sweet drink, adjust the sugar to taste.

  4. 4

    Add Lime Juice

Stir in 1 tablespoon of freshly squeezed lime juice for a refreshing tang.

  5. 5

    Chill the Agua de Jamaica

Let the mixture cool to room temperature, then refrigerate for at least 1 hour or until chilled.

  6. 6

    Serve with Ice

When ready to serve, fill glasses with ice cubes (approximately 1 cup of ice per glass) and pour the chilled Agua de Jamaica over the ice.

  7. 7

    Garnish (Optional)

Garnish each glass with lime wedges and fresh mint leaves if desired.
