Prepare the Glass
Chill a martini glass by filling it with ice water and setting it aside.

Mix the Martini
In a cocktail shaker, combine the vodka or gin, dry vermouth, and ice. Shake or stir well until chilled.

Strain and Serve
Empty the ice water from the chilled martini glass, then strain the mixed cocktail into the glass.

Garnish with either a stuffed olive or a twist of lemon peel.
